The Lions held a National Team Training Day on Monday evening at Geylang Field as they trained together for the first time in 2016 to prepare for their upcoming 2018 World Cup Qualifier against Afghanistan on 29 March.

Head Coach, National Teams Bernd Stange stated that Singapore will grow further after an encounter which saw them conceding a late goal to fall to a 2-1 defeat by Syria.

The Lions had fought bravely to come back from a one-goal deficit, with Safuwan Baharudin slotting home a penalty in the 89th minute.

Ten-man Singapore were dealt a cruel 2-1 loss by Syria after Omar Kharbin struck in the dying minutes of the game to give his side all three points.

The Lions were heading for a draw after Safuwan Baharudin had cancelled out Kharbin's opener in the 89th minute, but Syria rallied in additional time to earn a winner.

Head Coach, National Teams Bernd Stange said he could not fault his team after they gave a committed performance against Japan on Thursday evening.

Stange also regretted that his team could not deliver an upset despite seeing 33,868 spectators, the majority of whom were were Singapore fans, turn up for the match.

Singapore were dealt a 3-0 defeat by Japan on Thursday evening at the National Stadium in a Group E match for the FIFA World Cup 2018 and AFC Asian Cup 2019 Qualifiers.

This is Singapore's second loss of the campaign, and the Lions will need a win against Syria next Tuesday in order to keep alive their hopes of qualifying automatically for the next round of World Cup qualification and the 2019 Asian Cup.
