Melbourne City stint has made me stronger mentally, physically: Safuwan

National defender Safuwan Baharudin recently went on a training stint with Australian club Melbourne City FC from 10-19 January during their tour of Abu Dhabi. The developmental opportunity which was arranged between MCFC and FAS also saw him playing in the A-League club’s two matches against Al Jazira and FC Dnipro. In an interview with fas.org.sg before his return to Singapore, the 23-year-old tells us what the experience has been like, and how he has benefited from it.

The ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup journey may have ended for Singapore, but as far as Head Coach, National Teams, Bernd Stange was concerned, this is just the beginning for his team.

Only requiring a draw to progress to the semi-finals as Thailand were leading Myanmar 2-0 at the same time, the Lions were undone by a penalty in additional time.

Despite their best efforts, Singapore was unable to advance to the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup semi-finals as it fell 3-1 to Malaysia on Saturday evening.

Goals from Safee Sali, Safiq Rahim and Indra Putra Mahayuddin rendered Khairul Amri’s strike inconsequential as the defending champions finished third in Group B.

Singapore will face arch-rivals Malaysia in their final ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup Group B encounter tomorrow, where a win would send them into the last four of the competition.

Speaking ahead of the clash, Head Coach, National Teams, Bernd Stange has expressed his excitement ahead of the match at the National Stadium which is likely to see a full house.

Head Coach, National Teams, Bernd Stange was on cloud nine after Singapore secured a convincing 4-2 win over Myanmar in their second game of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup campaign.
