Singapore kept up their good form in the World Cup Qualifiers on Tuesday evening when they defeated Cambodia 2-1 at the National Stadium.

Faris Ramli and Fazrul Nawaz struck a goal apiece in each half, before Sos Suhana pulled one back for Cambodia midway through the second period.

The win, their third victory of the qualifiers, gives Singapore 10 points in Group E.

The decision to play the home FIFA World Cup and AFC Asian Cup qualifiers at the National Stadium may have surprised some, but it was a decision in line with the Football Association of Singapore’s (FAS) long-term strategy in bringing fans together to support the Lions.

When Singapore held much-heralded Japan to a 0-0 draw in June, a crowd of more than 57,000 fans at the Saitama Stadium were shocked into silence. However, a small group of people were cheering wildly at the final whistle – a group made up mostly of Singaporeans working or studying in Japan, or the spouses of Singaporeans.

One fan, however, had flown six and a half hours and over 5,000km from Singapore to cheer his nation on: lecturer and businessman Tan Hwee Heng.

Singapore Head Coach, National Teams Bernd Stange believes his charges are prepared to achieve maximum points on Tuesday evening when they face Cambodia in the World Cup Qualifiers.

The Lions are currently in third place in Group E with seven points after four games, with two wins, one draw and a defeat. One of the two wins include a 4-0 opening group game victory over Cambodia back in June.

Addressing the media at the pre-match press conference held at the Amara Hotel on Monday afternoon, Stange stated that the Lions are ‘ready to go’.

Singapore overcame a spirited Afghanistan side 1-0 in a World Cup 2018 and AFC Asian Cup 2019 qualifying Group E game on Thursday night at the National Stadium.

A bullet header from Khairul Amri in the second half was enough for the Lions to see off the visitors, who were determined to chalk up the first three points of their campaign.

A relatively youthful Singapore side has been called up for Singapore’s World Cup Qualifier match against Afghanistan this evening at the National Stadium, but they are unfazed by the tough task at hand.

Courts Young Lions’ M. Anumanthan and Amirul Adli have been recalled, while LionsXII’s winger Christopher Van Huizen was given his first international call-up to bring the squad's average age to 25.5.

Singapore will be aiming to grab a win in their first 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Qualifiers Asia Group E home game when they play Afghanistan at the National Stadium tomorrow evening.

This match will be followed by another home game to Cambodia on October 13 and Head Coach, National Teams, Bernd Stange has targeted nothing less than maximum points for his team.

FAS EXTENDS NATIONAL COACH’S CONTRACT

SINGAPORE, 18 SEPTEMBER 2015: The Football Association of Singapore today announced an extension of National Coach Bernd Stange’s contract to 15 April 2016.

FAS General Secretary Winston Lee said: “As we continue to strive toward our aim of qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup 2019, extending Bernd’s contract ensures continuity and leadership for the national team which has performed well in the ongoing FIFA World Cup/AFC Asian Cup joint qualifying campaign.
