The Lion City Cup is back in Singaporean hands after nine years - and it was a stylish and spirited U-17 team that covered themselves in glory with a 4-0 win over Hong Kong in the final.

This was a team whom wore their hearts on their sleeves, sleeves that contained more than a few opponent-baffling tricks as well.

Little wonder then that the Jalan Besar crowd took them to their hearts, from doggedly determined striker Ahmed Fahmie to goalscoring keeper Zaiful Nizam.

Singapore U-17 warmed up for the Lion City Cup final on Sunday with a 1-0 win over Perth.

Coach V Sundramoorthy gave most of his squad players a run out and it was right winger G Kumaresan, showing shades of Sundram’s dazzling skills all night long, who was the matchwinner with a firm shot planted past Perth keeper Luke Hudston.

If the praise has been pouring in for the Singapore U-17 team this week, perhaps the kindest thing that could be said for their U-16 counterparts is that a lot of work remains to be done.

A late flurry of goals booked Singapore U-17 a place in the Lion City Cup final as V Sundramoorthy's boys dispatched their U-16 counterparts 5-1 at the Tampines Stadium.

The U-17s were expected to cruise past the U-16 Cubs after looking impressive in earlier wins against Malaysia and Hong Kong, whereas the U-16s hadn't scored in their first two games.

Striker Sufian Anuar kept to the script as he opened the scoring for the U-17s after 25 minutes with his second goal of the tournament.
