Singapore Under-21 team fourth in Nations Cup after penalty shootout with Vietnam

The Singapore Under-21 players held the Vietnam Under-21s to a 2-2 draw before losing 5-4 on penalties to claim fourth place in the 2016 Nations Cup on Sunday evening at Hang Jebat Stadium.

Although Vietnam started the match in attack mode, they struggled to break down Singapore’s defence who repelled everything the Vietnamese threw at them.

Richard Tardy, Coach, Singapore National Under-21 Team, has rallied his players to bounce back stronger in their Nations Cup 2016 third/fourth-placing match against Vietnam on Sunday.

 

The players fought hard in their opening game against the Malaysia Under-21 team, but were unable to prevent the hosts from winning 3-0.

As the Under-21 National Team prepares to take on Malaysia in the inaugural Nations Cup 2016 across the Causeway, Shahrin Saberin believes that the team's understanding and familiarity will be key to their success in the competition.

The Home United defender's confidence stems from the fact that the team embarked on a training trip to Iran last month, where they played two matches, narrowly losing 0-1 and 0-2 to their Iranian counterparts.

SINGAPORE, 23 MARCH 2016: The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) would like to announce that Balestier Khalsa FC midfielder Zulkhair Mustaffa will be replacing Taufiq Muqminin of the Garena Young Lions in the Under-21 National Team due to an injury. In addition, Hougang United FC’s Haidil Sufian bin Rosli has been called up and will travel to face the Iran Under-21s together with the rest of the originally-announced squad.
