The National Football Academy was launched on 13 August 2000 with the aim of developing Singapore's most promising young footballers.
Trainees are scouted through a systematic talent identification process before being given the chance to develop their skills under some of the best youth coaches in the country. With teams at every age level from U-14 to U-18, the NFA represents the future of Singapore football.
Housed in its own building with adjacent training field and swimming pool at the Jalan Besar Stadium, the entire operation is geared towards producing players of outstanding football ability as well as aiding their physiological, psychological and academic growth.
The main objectives of the NFA are:
- To provide a conducive football training environment, coupled with programmes to assist trainees in their studies and career planning.
- To help players of outstanding ability to develop to their fullest potential.
- To groom outstanding young players for the Prime League, S.League and eventually to represent Singapore.
Specialised tuition classes are provided to ensure that the NFA trainees are grounded in the academic disciplines even as they are developing their football talent.
The NFA works closely with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Community Development and Sports, the Singapore Sports Council and the Singapore Sports School to provide the best resources to train its footballers.
Player welfare, including insurance, medical coverage and allowances are looked after under the purview of the NFA. Educational support for the players includes coach and player education, tuition and scholarships. The NFA also offers sports science support with physiology, psychology, nutrition, biomechanics, fitness conditioning and physiotherapy programmes.
International exposure is an essential part of a footballer's development, and the NFA regularly sends teams for international competitions and players for overseas training attachments. Past NFA teams have competed in tournaments in Denmark, Northern Ireland, at Asian levels and in Singapore-based age-group tournaments, including the venerable Lion City Cup. |
