National team not selected to play in Asian Games

Despite winning the Tiger Cup in 2004, turning in outstanding performances in recent international competitions and achieving a commendable 17th ranking in Asia, the Singapore national football team was nevertheless, given the snub by the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), who decided that the Lions will not be part of the contingent representing Singapore at the 15th Asian Games, to be held at the end of this year.

This edition of the Games will take place from December 1 to 15 2006 in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

The Selection Committee, headed by SNOC Chairman and Minister of Defence Teo Chee Hean, announced their decision on Wednesday. A total of 115 local athletes from 14 participating sports were selected, 23 more than the previous Asian Games. However, it was a case of déjà vu for football, one of the most watched sports in Singapore, as it was dropped from the list once again.

This year, 22 sports associations and organizations sent in nomination forms for their athletes. The associations that failed to make the cut include the following sports– football, international chess, silat, gymnastics, sepak takraw, squash and taekwando.
