It was the home of local football, having borne us legends such as Quah Kim Song, Fandi Ahmad and Terry Pathmanathan.
It was the home of the Kallang Wave, the sea of red that symbolized our fans’ undying passion and nationalistic pride, as they stood tall cheering on our footballing heroes.
What better way then, to bade this home of ours goodbye, with an international match-up between the Singapore Lions and a top Asian Football Confederation side – an exciting affair that could very well become the match of the year?
The Football Federation Australia (FFA) and the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) are pleased to confirm that an International “A” match between the first National teams of Australia and Singapore will be played on Saturday, 30 June 2007 at the National Stadium. Kickoff time is 7.30pm.
It will be the final football game played at the National Stadium, before the stadium is demolished and a new sports hub constructed in its place.
Prepare to indulge in nostalgia and take a walk down memory lane, for leading up to the big match, there will also be a series of commemorative events organized by the Singapore Sports Council (SSC), in partnership with the FAS and other National Sports Associations. Expect a football friendly between the Singapore Ex-Internationals and the Malaysian Ex-Internationals, where you will be able to catch all your favourite football veterans in action.
