The U-21 team is the stepping stone between the National Football Academy squads and the Young Lions U-23 team.

Coached by Singapore legend and Young Lions assistant coach Terry Pathmanathan, the team was set-up in 2004 with a series of trials drawing on talented players from the Prime League and Tertiary Institutes.

The team has played friendly matches against the likes of Malaysia U-19, Qatar U-20, the Solomon Islands national team and Indonesian club side Pekanbaru to provide the players with international exposure.

Several players from the U-21s, including the likes of Tengku Mushadad, Ismail Yunos and Shahril Alias, caught the eye of Singapore coach Radojko Avramovic and quickly made the jump into the senior squad.

The U-21s are a vital part of the Football Association of Singapore's plans for the 2009 South-East Asian Games.
