Safuwan Ready for Battle against Unknown Emeralds

Safuwan Baharudin has issued his team a rallying cry ahead of the Lions’ Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup Group E home qualifier against Turkmenistan on Tuesday.

With Singapore having earned one point from its two matches so far, there is no doubt about the importance of the fixture in the race to qualify for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.

“We do not know much about them, but like any Middle East team, they have a never-say-die mentality so we have to be patient,” Safuwan said of the 141st FIFA-ranked opponents.

“But no one should stop us and we must get the three points.

“We have not been winning games for the past few months, so it’s good to show that we can deliver results.”

National Team Head Coach V. Sundram Moorthy concurred with his defender-turned-midfielder’s assessment, as he hints at Safuwan’s possible participation on Tuesday.

The Singapore international started on the bench against Hong Kong in last week’s international friendly, but came on in the second half to dominate the aerial battles before scoring a penalty to salvage a 1-1 draw for the Lions.

“They are positive, very motivated for the game against Turkmenistan,” Sundram added. “It was a good show from the boys.

“We can’t lose this game in order to stay in the race for Asian Cup qualification. We would love to get three points.”

Whether Safuwan plays from the start or gets called upon from the bench, he is looking to make an impact and hopefully deliver on the scoring front.

“It is always important when you come off the bench that you do something for the team.

“I have played for PDRM up front for two seasons. I am the second top scorer in the team now, with 10 goals. To transfer our club form to the National Team is always difficult, but we have to produce now in the National Team.

“I have to prove even more to make people believe in Singapore football at the moment.”

The match against Turkmenistan will kick off at 7.30pm on Tuesday 5 September 2017 at Jalan Besar Stadium. Tickets to this match are available for purchase at http://www.globaltickets.sg/ and all AXS Stations island-wide.
