Stags Mark Return to Tampines with Victory

Tampines Rovers made a triumphant return to their traditional home in the east on Friday night, beating Brunei DPMM FC 2-0 in a match watched by 4,676 fans at the new Our Tampines Hub. Shakir Hamzah scored midway through the first half to set the Stags on their way, before Shahdan Sulaiman’s late penalty secured all three points for the team’s first match in Tampines since 2011.

DPMM had their chances to equalise before Shahdan converted the spot-kick, but were kept at bay by goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud as well as the crossbar. In the end, the home side’s dominant performance showed, and the final score was an accurate reflection of the match’s proceedings.

Among the vociferous capacity crowd were special guests such as Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Mr Masagos Zulkifli; Member of Parliament for Tampines GRC and Mayor, North East CDC Mr Desmond Choo; Chairman of Our Tampines Hub’s Advisory Board and former FAS President Mr Mah Bow Tan; his fellow former FAS President Assoc Prof Ho Peng Kee; and current FAS President Mr Lim Kia Tong.

The match was especially sweet for fans and residents of Tampines as their team had been playing their “home” matches in the west of Singapore for over five years (Clementi Stadium from 2012-2014, and Jurong West Stadium from 2014 onwards) while the old Tampines Stadium was being redeveloped into Our Tampines Hub. The new complex now boasts not just a brand new stadium with a turf surface, but also houses – among other things – a shopping mall, library and swimming complex.
