SINGAPORE, 10 NOVEMBER 2016: The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) is pleased to announce that the FIFA Girls’ Football Festival 2016 took place at Serangoon Stadium today from 8am to 4pm. The annual Festival saw almost 450 girls below the age of 12 participating, almost twice as many as last year.

FAS Vice-President Lim Kia Tong was the Guest of Honour at the third edition of the increasingly popular all-girls event, the culmination of the mini-festivals and weekly FIFA Live Your Goals sessions that FAS has organized in the course of the year.

Following the success of the last two editions, 39 teams put their best foot forward and engaged in some friendly competition during the event which included 5-a-side matches for the Under-8 and Under-10 categories, and 8-a-side matches for the Under-12s.

Although results were not recorded for the Under-8 and Under-10 categories, medals were presented to the top three teams in the Under-12 category – champions JSSL Singapore, First Runners-up Girls’ Dream Team, and Second Runners-up Admiralty Primary School. Participants in each category were also awarded with trophies for the Most Promising Player, Most Sporting Player, and Team Fair Play awards.

In addition to the matches played, fun-filled small-sided games, fringe activities, and football clinics were conducted concurrently for all to enjoy football at the event.

Ms Julie Teo, General Manager, Grassroots and Women’s Football, said: “The fact that we are getting more participants year-on-year is very encouraging indeed. We were very pleasantly surprised when registrations started coming in – we didn’t expect to get almost double the number of participants this year! This shows the increasing popularity of football among girls, and we are certainly looking to build on this by extending our outreach to more girls with similar events. We hope this will fuel their passion for the sport.”

Dakota Less, from Under-12 Category winners JSSL Singapore, enthused: “I came here to play football and to make some new friends. I really enjoyed myself today – finishing as champions was definitely an unexpected bonus!”
