Singapore U-19 Squad announced for AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup 2024 Qualifiers
Coach Chris Yip-Au in a training session for AFF Under-18 Women Championship, July 2022
SINGAPORE, 24 FEBRUARY 2023 – The Singapore’s Under-19 Women’s National Team will head to Vietnam next month for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U20 Women’s Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2024 Qualifiers (Round 1).
The team is set to depart for Việt Trì on 5 March 2023 and will begin their Group F campaign against India on 7 March 2023.
They will then face off against the other two opposition teams in the group, host Vietnam and Indonesia, on 9 and 11 March respectively. All of Singapore’s matches will be played at the Việt Trì Stadium.
Head Coach Chris Yip-Au has named a 23-player squad, who were selected through their performances with their respective clubs during last season’s Deloitte Women’s Premier League (WPL), Women’s National League (WNL), as well as their participation in the annual Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Games, representing their respective institutions.
Four players – Shazana Ashiq, Rachel Chan, Jasvinder Singh, Alyssha Hannah – will represent Singapore for the first time, while the remaining 18 players last took part in the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Under-18 Women’s Championship in Palembang, Indonesia, last July.
Four players named in the squad are also part of the Lionesses: defenders Dhaniyah Qasimah, Irsalina Irwan, Siti Nurerwadah and midfielder Nurhidayu Naszri.
Yip-Au believes that the team has the range and resilience needed despite the rigorous tournament schedule: “Playing three matches back-to-back can be very demanding for the body. However, this will not be our first rodeo at all.
“Based on our selections, we have a stronger squad depth now. As long as we are able to apply the principles we worked on in trainings, follow through our recovery protocols and show the resilience to persevere in all three matches, we can expect to see greater progress in the skills and capabilities of the players.
“More importantly, this competition is a great opportunity for the team to gain experience, whilst also allowing us to identify our shortcomings that we would need to work on both individually, and as a team.”
The AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup 2024 will be held in Uzbekistan and will be played as an under-20 tournament for the first time. A total of eight teams will play in the competition, with the top three teams qualifying for the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
As the biennial tournament was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Japan are the defending champions having won the last edition in 2019. Singapore last participated at the tournament when it was still known as the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship, in 2002 and 2004.
