Singapore U-19 squad announced for AFF U19 Women Championship 2023
Former Lions’ forward Fazrul Nawaz names his final squad for the upcoming tournament next month
SINGAPORE, 28 JUNE 2023 – Twenty-three players have been called up to represent Singapore at the AFF U19 Women’s Championship at Palembang, Indonesia next month.
The young Lionesses have been drawn into Group B for the regional tournament, and are set to depart for Palembang on 4 July, where they will first face Vietnam on 6 July before playing against Causeway rivals Malaysia two days later. Both matches will kick off at 4.30pm (Singapore time) and will be held at the Athletic Field.
Former Lions forward Fazrul Nawaz, who was also the assistant coach of the senior Lionesses during their recent SEA Games campaign, has named a 23-player squad, who were selected through their participation in March’s AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup 2024 Qualifiers, AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers in April, and their respective clubs during last season’s Deloitte Women’s Premier League (WPL), as well as Women’s National League (WNL).
Nine players from the U-16 team, who made an admirable second place finish at the group stages in April’s AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers, has made the cut for the U-19 team. Notably, Lionesses defenders Irsalina Irwan (3 international caps), who also participated in the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers, and Dhaniyah Qasimah, who took part in SEA Games 2023 in May (24 international caps), have been added to the final squad.
Coach Fazrul shared the process behind the selection of players: “I sought players who truly grasp our philosophy, which is what we’re looking to impart in our national senior team. I am banking on the international experience and capabilities of Dhaniyah and Irsalina to add a level of professionalism and creativity to the squad. 9 players from the U-16 team make up the remaining bulk of the squad based on their remarkable performance during the recent AFC U-17 qualifiers. It became evident that they are prepared to venture beyond their comfort zones, and I hope that participating in this tournament will give them the opportunity to develop their technical and tactical capabilities in a more competitive environment.”
He shared his aspirations for the team for this competition: “I hope I can instill self-belief and cultivate a winning mentality among our girls, recognizing that these are the pivotal elements they need to excel in international competitions. Both Vietnam and Malaysia matches will be stern tests for the girls, but at this stage internationally, there are no easy walk in the park”.
The AFF Under-19 Women’s Championships will take place from 5 to 15 July 2023 in Palembang, Indonesia. The tournament is set to return to its original Under-19 format, which will see a total of ten countries participating, which have been drawn into two groups of three and one group of four. Three winners from each group, and the best runner-up, will progress to the semi-finals and compete for a spot in the final, which will be held on 15 July 2023.
