Singapore drawn with Thailand and Vietnam for AFF U23 Championship 2022
SINGAPORE, 30 DECEMBER 2021 – Singapore will face Thailand and Vietnam in the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Under-23 Championship 2022 next year in Cambodia.
The official draw for the third edition of the tournament, to be held between 14 February 2022 and 26 February 2022, was made on Wednesday (29 Dec) in Singapore and saw 11 teams split into three groups. Singapore were drawn in Group C with the Thais and the Viets, while the other two groups comprised four teams each.
Teams were ranked based on the previous tournament in 2019, which Singapore had pulled out of after deciding to focus on preparations for the Asian Football Confederation U23 Championship Qualifiers then. All the matches will take place at the Morodok Techno Stadium and Prince Stadium, with the fixtures to be revealed in due course.
AFF President Major General Khiev Sameth said at the draw: “Moving forward, the AFF U23 Championship will be a permanent fixture in our competition calendar. This age-group competition will complement the existing programmes of the Southeast Asian teams and help them prepare for key competitions including the Olympics, Asian Games and SEA Games.”
Singapore finished as runners-up in the inaugural edition in 2005, which was won by Thailand. The second edition in 2019 was won by Indonesia, who trumped Thailand in the final.
