Albirex And DPMM Set To Battle For League Cup Glory

SINGAPORE, 29 JULY 2016: Albirex Niigata FC (S) and Brunei DPMM FC are set to meet in their quest for glory in tomorrow‚Äôs The New Paper League Cup final at the Jalan Besar Stadium, while Hougang United FC and Geylang International FC face off against each other in the Plate Final.

Defending Great Eastern-YEO’S S.League champions Brunei DPMM are looking to win the League Cup for the fourth time, having last won it in 2014. However, they will be facing tough competition against the White Swans, who are the defending champions of the League Cup. Having clinched their second League Cup trophy last year, Albirex also sealed the Cup double last year by winning the RHB Singapore Cup 2015.

‚ÄúWe are here to win this competition. The players have worked tirelessly on the training ground to address the problems we had earlier on in the season, conceding goals too easily. We have showed that this hard work is coming to fruition ‚Äì scoring nine goals and only conceding one ‚Äì and we hope we can make the last step and win the final,” said Brunei DPMM coach Steve Kean.

Kean’s opposite number, Albirex Niigata Head Coach Naoki Naruo, said: ‚ÄúWe have faced many obstacles in order to get to this final. Overcoming these challenges has made us stronger, and we will be very motivated to show what we have gained from these learning experiences, and to perform at a high level in the final.‚Äù

Meanwhile, Hougang United and Geylang International are both looking to achieve some success in the Plate Final.

“Everyone here wants to create history with Hougang United FC. This is the perfect opportunity for us and we will play our hearts out,” said K. Balagumaran, Hougang’s Head Coach.

His Geylang International FC counterpart Hasrin Jailani had a similar view.

“It‚Äôs a Plate Final, but a Final nonetheless. The team has worked hard to reach where we are now in the competition. We will play it like any other game, to win. All the best to Hougang United and also the two teams in the League Cup Final.‚Äù
