SINGAPORE, 30 SEPTEMBER 2022 –
The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) Coach Education & Development (CED) department recently concluded Part 6 of the FAS/Asian Football Confederation (AFC) ‘Pro’ Diploma Coaching Course.

Held between 19 and 23 September, the 18 participants continued their journey towards obtaining the certification under the mentorship of Lead Coach Developer, Mr Robert Sherman. This followed on from Part 5, which was held in June.

Prior to the commencement of the course, a minute of silence was observed in remembrance of the late FAS President Mr Lim Kia Tong. Mr Sherman then oversaw a practical session on the first day at Jalan Besar Stadium, which covered the topics of “FRAME – Checklist” and “Set Plays”. Players from Hougang United’s Singapore Premier League (SPL) squad were on hand to assist with creating realistic situations during the session.

L-R: Mr Syarqawi Buhari (Senior Executive, CED), Mr Jose Ariston Padre Caslib (AFC Coach Education Panel Member), Mr Robert Sherman (FAS/AFC ‘Pro’ Diploma Coaching Course Lead Coach Developer), Mr Michael Hugh Browne (FAS Technical Director), Mr Wim Koevermans (AFC Principal Coaching Consultant), Mr Zainudeen Hassan (Head, FAS CED), Mr Jordon Goh (Executive, FAS CED)

Throughout the week, Mr Sherman also went to every participant’s own coaching environment and provided feedback to them based on their training session on a key tactical element. Two delegates from the AFC Coach Education Panel, Mr Wim Koevermans (AFC Principal Coaching Consultant) and Mr Jose Ariston Padre Caslib (AFC Coach Education Panel Member), were in attendance during the course in order to observe the delivery of it.

Mr Sherman told FAS.org.sg: “This part of the course offered an invaluable opportunity to watch the participants working in their own environment. I was able to provide real-time feedback regarding their analysis, session design, and their coaching process. I am really pleased with the progress the group have made.”

Tanjong Pagar United Head Coach Hasrin Jailani added: “It was a good learning experience overall. We had a very productive time with Mr Robert Sherman, where he taught us to improve on our sessions by zeroing in on the small details, which were important for my team.”

Lion City Sailors Under-21 Assistant Coach Winston Yap was similarly appreciative: “The best takeaway of the feedback session for me was the detailed tactical preparation session against the opponent. Lead Coach Developer, Mr Robert Sherman, gave out pointers for me to reflect on. The comments will guide me when I work in a realistic environment while I try to achieve a better quality training session. I truly appreciate the conversation and time spent with him.”

FAS Head, CED, Mr Zainudeen Hassan said: “We are grateful to Mr Robert Sherman and the AFC Coach Education Panel members for their valuable support and guidance throughout the FAS/AFC ‘Pro’ Diploma Coaching Course. The face-to-face interaction, which includes individual, group meetings, and personal feedback session augurs well for the participants in their coaching journey.”

The participants’ next step will be to undertake Part 7, which is an overseas visit, between 3 to 9 January 2023.
