SINGAPORE, 11 MARCH 2018: With the friendly match between the Singapore and Maldives Women’s National Teams on Monday 5 March, the Football Association of Singapore opened the celebrations of the annual Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Football Day. FAS continued the celebrations over the weekend with 1,600 participants joining various football tournaments held at Serangoon Stadium.

The two-day event was held in conjunction with ActiveSG’s end-of-season festival and featured several different tournament categories, including the Under-8, Under-10 and Under-12 Children’s five-a-side, Women’s Open seven-a-side, Girls’ Under-17 and Under-12 five-a-side, and Family 3s categories.

General Manager, Grassroots and Women’s Football Julie Teo said: “It is heartening to see the number of participants in Women’s Football Day increase year on year. Coupled with our Women’s National Team’s friendly match against Maldives earlier this week, this year’s commemoration of this significant occasion was indeed special. I hope more women and girls will join us in the sport as we continue to work towards raising the profile of women’s football in Singapore.”

Said Nursyaima Bte Abdul Aziz, who participated in the Women’s Open category in Team Ohana: “Having participated in FAS’ activities for Women’s Football Day for the past three years, I was looking forward to joining this year’s festivities. It’s great that more people are joining us to celebrate International Women’s Day through football and I hope more will come forward to support this beautiful sport.”
