FAS concludes Grassroots Coaching Course for educators



SINGAPORE, 21 MAY 2024 – The culmination of the 2024 FAS Grassroots Coaching Course (PESTA) on 20 and 21 May 2024 marked a significant milestone in the journey of educators delving into the realm of football coaching. Conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Education’s Physical Education and Sports Teacher Academy (PESTA), this course aimed to equip teachers with the skills and knowledge necessary to become effective football coaches for young players aged between six to nine years old.


17 educators gathered at the Academy of Singapore Teachers to partake in this enriching experience under the mentorship of Lead Coach Developer, Mr. Isa Haleem, and Assistant Coach Developer, Mr. Shasi Kumar. The course delved into both theoretical and practical aspects of coaching, covering topics such as the “4 Corner Model”, “Qualities of a Good Coach”, and practical sessions on “Introduction of S.M.I.L.E.S.” and “Components of Coaching Session”.

Highlighting the practical application of modern coaching techniques, guest presenters from Naval Base Primary School and Hong Wen School shared their experiences utilizing the FIFA Football For School (F4S) app. Their insights provided invaluable guidance to course participants on incorporating technology into their coaching methodologies.



A key feature of the course was the emphasis on hands-on learning. Course participants actively engaged in planning and delivering coaching sessions, receiving constructive feedback from Coach Developers to enhance their skills further.

Mr. Ryan Tan Jun Kai expressed his satisfaction with the course, highlighting the comprehensive nature of the program and the invaluable insights shared by Coach Developers: “The FAS Grassroots Coaching Course (PESTA) was a comprehensive and engaging experience from start to finish. The Coach Developers were knowledgeable and passionate, providing practical insights and strategies that were applicable to coaching based on their rich experiences. The hands-on approach and the interactive learning environment helped to equip me with valuable coaching skills but also instilled a deeper appreciation for the importance of mentorship and player development in the grassroots football community. Overall, it was a rewarding and enriching experience that I would highly recommend to anyone looking to get started on their coaching journey in Singapore football.”

Ms. Shafira Binte Zailani echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the confidence gained and the practical strategies learned throughout the course: “After attending the FAS Grassroots Coaching Course, I gain the confidence to start on this coaching journey. The sessions were insightful, offering practical strategies and techniques to enhance coaching skills. We were fortunate to be guided by experienced and passionate Coach Developers, Coach Isa and Coach Shasi, who are highly knowledgeable and engaging, fostering a supportive learning environment. I particularly appreciated the hands-on exercises that allowed me to apply what I learned in real scenarios. Overall, it was a valuable investment in my coaching development, and I feel more confident in my ability to effectively coach others.”


Lead Coach Developer Mr. Isa Haleem commended the passion and dedication of educators embarking on this coaching journey: “It is heartwarming seeing teachers so passionate and wanting to embark on the coaching journey. They play a vital role as teacher-coaches foster a culture of collaboration by facilitating peer-to-peer learning, sharing best practices, and encouraging teamwork among educators. Following the course, participants will embark on a 16-hour attachment with the football teams at their respective schools, allowing them to apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills in a real-world setting.
