Inaugural FAS Introductory Coaching Course (Republic Polytechnic) concluded
24 participants attended the first ever FAS Introductory Coaching Course at Republic Polytechnic, March 2023.
SINGAPORE, 11 MAY 2023 – The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) recently concluded its first ever FAS Introductory Coaching Course (Republic Polytechnic). The program involved aspiring and dedicated individuals from Republic Polytechnic’s diploma in Sport Coaching who have a passion for educating and fostering players, as well as embarking on their football coaching journey.
Held over two weekends at Republic Polytechnic, a total of 24 participants came under the mentorship of Lead Coach Developer, Zainudeen Hassan, and Assistant Coach Developer, Toni Teo. Former Lions international, Nazri Nasir was also around as an Observing Coach Developer.

The first weekend of the course (11 and 12 March 2023) covered the following areas:
Theoretical topics
– FAS National Playing Philosophy
– Coaching Profession
Practical sessions
– Introduction of S.M.I.L.E.S
– Organizing a coaching session
The second weekend of the course (18 and 19 March 2023) was focused on participants-led practical sessions where course participants worked in groups to deliver their respective session plans.
Prior to doing so, the course participants had a consultation session with the Coach Developers to discuss and refine their session plan before putting it into action.
As part of the course, participants were required to lead their own practical sessions while being recorded by their peers. These videos were then used for review and constructive feedback during sessions with the Coach Developers.

One of the participants, Harry Lum Hon Lup told FAS.ORG.SG: “The FAS Introductory Coaching Course was an eye opener into the coaching world that I’ve not come across before. The Coach Developers were patient and more than willing to share their experiences with us.
“The demonstrations were also easy to understand. I would recommend aspiring coaches to go for the FAS Introductory Coaching Course, as the amount of information in the course is a good launchpad for new coaches to get their first experiences in coaching.”
Fellow participant Shaik Mohammed Asyraf Bin Shaik Rahamathullah, also shared: “The FAS Introductory Coaching Course was very well structured and well organized throughout the four days. Despite being in the coaching industry for a few years now, I felt that the course has taught me a lot about the basics of planning and executing the sessions. It’s a very good platform for aspiring coaches with or without experiences to start with.
“This FAS Introductory Coaching Course will be very useful for new coaches to understand the fundamentals and to have the feel of coaching before moving on to the FAS/AFC ‘C’ Diploma (SG-Coach Level 1 Full Integration) Coaching Course. I would recommend this FAS Introductory Coaching Course as a stepping stone to those who aspire to be a coach.”

Assistant Coach Developer, Toni Teo also said: “The course participants were well prepared with sports coaching knowledge. The Republic Polytechnic campus offered a very conducive environment and facilities for us to conduct the course.”
Head coach of Education and Development, Zainudeen Hassan said: “This course is one of the fruits of the memorandum of understanding between the Football Association of Singapore and the Republic Polytechnic.
“Most of the course participants took part in the last FAS Grassroots Coaching Course held at Republic Polytechnic which assisted them with their learning in this course. We look forward to conducting similar courses at Republic Polytechnic in the future for their students.”
