FAS names 22-man squad for International Friendlies against China and Hong Kong
SINGAPORE, 22 August 2013: The Football Association of Singapore today announced that 22 players have been called up to the National Team which will be playing friendly matches away, to China and Hong Kong, on 6 and 10 September 2013 respectively.
The squad retains a familiar look from the one which took on Oman in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers earlier this month, with only three changes to the squad.
National Team Head Coach Bernd Stange said: “In addition to preparations for the upcoming Asian Cup qualifying match in mid-October, the matches against China and Hong Kong will further facilitate the development of the young players who are likely to represent Singapore at the SEA Games in December.”
He added: “China is one of Asia’s top teams, and their recent results at the East Asian Cup also reflect the quality of their team. We look forward to both matches. I would also like to thank the S.League clubs for their support towards the national team.”
With the Merdeka Cup taking place concurrently with these two matches, three players will make their way to join up with the Under-23s after the game in China: “As part of the preparations for the upcoming SEA Games in December, three of our young players who will be eligible for this year’s SEA Games will join up with the National Under-23 Squad for the Merdeka Cup after the China game.”
“Coach Sundram and I are always in communication with each other on how to best manage both the National Team and the Under-23 squad. Our focus has always been on developing a strong National Team, and the Under 23 players can only enhance their development as players by turning out for the senior side. This will in turn provide us with stronger players in our SEA Games squad, which will benefit us in our SEA Games preparation.”
The team will depart on 4 September 2013, and return one week later on 11 September 2013.
