FAS’ reply to Media Queries on referees
As per our Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) Referee’s Department carries out regular review processes to assess our referees’ performances based on the feedback provided by the referee assessors. The referee assessors comprise retired former FIFA referees & assistant referees who are present at matches to evaluate the referees’ performances. Areas highlighted by the referee assessors will be reviewed by the FAS Referees’ Department. Following the review, the Referees’ Department may highlight some of these issues to the Referees’ Committee, headed by Chairman Mr Lim Tong Hai.
As part of the FAS Strategic Plan, FAS is always looking at various ways to enhance the capabilities of our referees such as sending them for overseas attachments and seminars. For example, three referees and one referee instructor went to Nyon, Switzerland last year attending the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Centre of Refereeing Excellence (CORE) Programme, and had the chance to officiate in games over there.
As a forward-looking organisation, we are also always looking to recruit and train young referees. Currently, there are 32 referees officiating in the S.League, out of which 15 are FIFA referees and assistant referees, and 17 are Class One referees. Of the 17 Class One referees, only two of them are over 45 years old.
