FAS’ Reply To Media Query Regarding Conclusion Of S.League 2016 Season

“This has indeed been one of the best Great Eastern-YEO’S S.League seasons in recent years. The return of the former LionsXII players to the S.League has certainly made the season more exciting and competitive, while the introduction of former Arsenal and Liverpool star Jermaine Pennant created good buzz this season. There was an approximate 25% increase in average match attendance this year, with over 3,500 fans watching the Home United vs Tampines Rovers match at Bishan Stadium in March.

Another milestone was Tampines Rovers, who reached the quarter-finals of the AFC Cup competition, becoming the first S.League club to play in the new National Stadium.

S.League clubs are mainly funded through a combination of FAS subsidies, club sponsorships, gate takings as well fruit machine operations. In the long run, there is a need to find other revenue streams for S.League clubs as the intent is to make our S.League clubs stronger financially.

We have had a good 2016 season, and we are looking forward to another great season in 2017.”
