FAS response to media query on naturalisation of players

Share

“The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) is of the firm belief that the development of a sustainable pipeline of quality local players is vital towards producing a successful National Team as well as the long-term growth of Singapore football. Therefore, it is essential for us to continue to scout and groom young talent, provide more playing opportunities as well as enhance the pathways and structure for the development of local youth players, as we assess and prepare those who are capable of representing Singapore at senior levels.

“However, it is increasingly evident that we need to concurrently explore the option of expediting the process of integrating naturalised players via the existing Foreign Talent Scheme.  By reacting quickly to identify such suitable players who can contribute positively to Singapore football, it is a key step towards further enhancing our National Teams to achieve the mid-to-long term goals of the FAS.

“But in order to do so, we will still have to abide by FIFA’s rules governing eligibility to play for representative teams as well as consider the various circumstances surrounding any potential players who may be eligible for naturalization, some of which may be beyond the FAS’s purview.”
