FAS’ response to media query regarding Singaporean footballers playing in overseas clubs
“I am pleased to see that many Singaporean players are playing in overseas leagues this year.
“Playing abroad will give them greater exposure to a variety of playing styles, atmospheres and environments. These players have been selected to join the clubs on their own merit and will want to justify their place in the squad, which will only serve to further improve their abilities.
“The different experiences and new insights that the players will bring to centralised National Team training sessions bode well for the future of the National Team.”
– Singapore Head Coach V. Sundram Moorthy
“The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) has always maintained close relations with regional Member Associations (MAs) and is supportive of players who wish to play abroad as it broadens their horizons.
“The unprecedented number of Singaporean footballers playing abroad suggests that clubs in the regional MAs have the confidence and trust in the abilities of our players. These players are examples for our youths to aspire towards, especially knowing that their football development and skills were honed while playing in our domestic league.
“The FAS will be investing strategically to allow our coaching staff to track the players plying their trade abroad, including through scouting trips and with the network of coaches we have regionally.”
– FAS Acting General Secretary Yazeen Buhari
