FAS’ response to query on ASEAN Club Championship
“As the President of The Football Association of Singapore, I welcome the creation of the new ASEAN Club Championship (ACC), which has the backing of FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
“There are numerous benefits of having the ACC. The tournament will provide our local clubs a valuable opportunity to compete with the best teams in Southeast Asia and help to raise the profile of local football, in particular the Singapore Premier League. In the process it strengthen the development of football in ASEAN. It is the goal of FAS to see our National Teams perform well both at the Asian and global levels.
“This competition may also potentially provide our clubs with an entry point to the prestigious FIFA Club World Cup. This gives our players something to aspire to since they now have the opportunity to share the pitch with some world’s best players in a competitive fixture.
“The ACC will enhance the profile and competitiveness of the respective domestic leagues in Southeast Asia while at the same time providing a platform for players from ASEAN to secure playing contracts in the top Asian and European leagues. Clubs participating in the ACC will also be able to generate additional revenue streams.
“Finally, another key objective of having the ACC would be to strengthen existing bonds of regional solidarity and promote friendship among the 640 million citizens of ASEAN.”
