Garena Young Lions unveils squad, new kit and partnership with Singapore Cancer Society
GARENA YOUNG LIONS UNVEILS SQUAD, NEW KIT AND PARTNERSHIP WITH SINGAPORE CANCER SOCIETY
SINGAPORE, 24 FEBRUARY 2017: The Garena Young Lions (GYL) squad for the 2017 Great Eastern-Hyundai S.League season was officially unveiled today along with the team’s new kit at the Jalan Besar Stadium. A partnership with Singapore Cancer Society was also announced, where half of the gross ticket proceeds from GYL’s S.League 2017 home matches will be donated to the Society.
In view of the preparation for this year’s South-east Asian (SEA) Games, the line-up of the squad comprises only Under-22 players, with an average age of 19.94. New additions to the squad include former Home United FC players Shahrin Saberin and Ikhsan Fandi Ahmad – the youngest player in the team at 17 years – as well as R. Aaravin, among others.
“We would like to thank Garena for their support for the Young Lions in 2016, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with them this year. We are also glad to be able to contribute to Singapore Cancer Society’s worthy cause. In addition to the donation, we will be offering complimentary access to their beneficiaries for all Garena Young Lions 2017 home S.League matches,” said Lim Kia Tong, President of Football Association of Singapore (FAS) Provisional Council.
“Youth development is a key focus at the Football Association of Singapore, and the Garena Young Lions team comprises some of our best young players. Fielding the team in the S.League, allows them to compete with top professionals and be exposed to a variety of playing styles that will help further their development. This season will undoubtedly be a test for our young players as they no longer have the guidance of experienced professionals like they did last season. However, their development is our priority, rather than the results alone, and I look forward to witnessing the growth of our boys.”
Commenting on the partnership, Albert Ching, Chief Executive Officer, Singapore Cancer Society said: “Singapore Cancer Society is privileged to be the sole beneficiary of this fundraising initiative by Football Association of Singapore. Through this, we also hope to reach out to the players, their fans and spectators to be our advocates and further spread the awareness of cancer.  The proceeds raised will assist in our programmes and services to minimise cancer and maximise life. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of those impacted by cancer.”
GYL Head Coach V. Selvaraj remarked: “We have 14 new players joining us this season, and many will be playing at a professional level for the first time. But for all of them, playing in the S.League in a young team, against older and more experienced players, will bring them out of their comfort zone and challenge them to become better players. The boys will be busy this year, preparing for the SEA Games alongside playing in the S.League. I encourage fans to turn up to be the boys’ 12th man, to support and inspire them in their preparations for the SEA Games.”
Added team captain Shahrin Saberin: “It is great that we have the opportunity to play in the S.League with the Garena Young Lions. We’re all young players here, but what we lack in experience, we make up with passion, which is why we appreciate that Garena Young Lions’ focus is to develop players like us. The various chances we get to play international friendlies are also very beneficial in our development as we get to benchmark ourselves against our counterparts.”
Long-time GYL fan Sunny Lee agreed: “It’s clear that after playing in the Garena Young Lions last year, the boys have improved with the exposure to the intensity of professional football. I’m sure they will get even better this season, and I hope that more fans will join me and support them in their journey not just in the S.League, but also to the SEA Games this year.”
The Garena Young Lions will kick off their 2016 Great Eastern-Hyundai S.League campaign against Home United FC on Monday at 7.30pm at Bishan Stadium.
