SINGAPORE, 7 NOVEMBER 2023 – Geylang International have emerged as champions of the 2023 Centre of Excellence (COE) Under-17 league after five months of battle with eight teams.

In a nail-biting finish to the season, Geylang narrowly secured the title with just one point separating them from their closest rivals, Balestier Khalsa. Their status as champions was confirmed literally in the final moments. Geylang’s hard-fought 2-1 victory against fourth-placed Tampines Rovers rendered Balestier’s 4-2 win against Tanjong Pagar United inconsequential.

Geylang got off to a bright start when defender Syafi Suhaimi scored in the 14th minute, but they failed to add to their tally for the rest of the first half, with Tampines Rovers midfielder Nicholas Beninger equalising at the 40th minute. The young Eagles faced difficulty breaking the deadlock in the second half, seemingly dashing their hopes of clinching the title.

Meanwhile, in the other match, Balestier appeared to be on the path to victory for the title. Balestier initially took the lead with a goal from midfielder Aify Raiyan in the 58th minute, followed by an equalizer from Tanjong Pagar’s Taresh Kannan in the 62nd minute. The forward contributed another goal just two minutes later, putting Tanjong Pagar in the lead. However, in stoppage time, Balestier managed to score two more goals, courtesy of forward Mikhael Ismail and defender Isma Danish Bukhari, the latter having already scored in the 69th minute. The match concluded with a 4-2 score, with Balestier seemingly set to claim the trophy.

However, in a stunning turn of events, Geylang shattered Balestier’s dreams. Defender Oktu Poyraz scored a late winner six minutes into extra time, securing the title for Geylang in dramatic fashion.

This win added another feather to Geylang’s cap, with forward Abdul Musqid Izzet finishing as the league’s top scorer with 16 goals. Congratulations to Geylang for their well-deserved victory in the COE U17 League, and kudos to all the teams for making this season an exciting and memorable one.
