In Memoriam: Mr Othman Wok
The management and staff of the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) are saddened by the passing of former Cabinet minister Mr Othman Wok today.
In the early years of our nationhood, Mr Othman played a key role in the development and promotion of local sports when he set up a sports department within the Ministry of Culture and Social Affairs in 1966. In the same year, he also officiated the groundbreaking ceremony of the first National Stadium, which he has been known to have been a strong proponent of.
Mr Othman also chaired the then-National Sports Promotion Board, which was set up in 1971 to streamline the administration of national sports programmes, and drove the movement to get all Singaporeans involved in sports.
Singapore owes Mr Othman a great deal as he was part of Singapore’s first generation of leaders, driving Singapore forward and making it possible for us to be where we are today.
The thoughts of everyone in the Singapore football fraternity are with his wife and their four daughters.
