SINGAPORE, 8 MARCH 2015: The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) today organised the inaugural Women’s Football Day (WFD) at the Padang, in conjunction with International Women’s Day. The event was graced by Guest of Honour (GOH) Ms Grace Fu (Minister, Prime Minister’s Office; Second Minister for the Environment and Water Resources and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs).

Some 500 girls and women participated in the WFD along with their families and other loved ones, with tournaments held for 7-a-side, 5-a-side and Family 3s teams. GOH Ms Fu also joined in the festivities, taking part in a Family Fun 3s match. She also presented the prizes to the top three teams in each tournament, as well as the Top Scorer and Most Valuable Player awards for the 7-a-side and 5-a-side competitions.

“We are very pleased with today’s turnout at the first Women’s Football Day. Women’s Football remains a key pillar in the FAS Strategic Plan, therefore we are working hard to reach out to more girls and women to enlarge the talent pool for our women’s teams, and the overwhelming response has shown that this is a good way to do so. We are grateful to our venue sponsors Singapore Recreation Club for their generous support, and all other sponsors for their help in making this event a success,” said Ms Julie Teo, General Manager, Grassroots, Women’s Football and Volunteer Management, Football Association of Singapore.

“The Singapore Recreation Club has a rich tradition as a sporting club and has actively supported all sportsmen in both field and indoor sports. We are proud to partner the Football Association of Singapore for the Women’s Football Day as part of the International Women’s Day Celebrations. Hopefully, this will put to rest the notion that soccer is a man-only sport. Women too can make their mark on the field and play equally well both socially and competitively. I wish the organisers the best and look forward to a day of entertainment and fun,” said Dr Johnny Goh Kok Guan, President of the Singapore Recreation Club.
