Leading The Way For Female Referees
SINGAPORE, 8 MARCH 2016: Two Singaporean female referees, Ms Abirami Naidu and Ms Rohaidah Nasir, have both been given the honour of officiating in the ongoing Women’s Olympic Football Tournament Rio 2016 – Asian Qualifiers Final Round.
Both ladies were selected alongside a group of 18 other FIFA Referees and FIFA Assistant Referees from the various confederations as match officials for the tournament being held in Osaka, Japan. So far, they have been appointed to officiate in three matches; DPR Korea vs China on 1 March, Vietnam vs DPR Korea on 4 March, and Vietnam vs Japan on 7 March.
Abirami and Rohaidah, both 33, are Singapore’s first – and so far only – female FIFA Referee and Assistant Referee respectively. Aside from the Olympic qualifiers in Osaka, both of them are equipped with extensive refereeing experience having each officiated at over 10 other international tournaments.
Abirami, who has been a FIFA Referee since 2009, was part of the match officials team for major international tournaments such as the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, 2015 FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup, and the Algarve Cup 2015.
Rohaidah attained FIFA Assistant Referee status in 2011 and has since officiated in tournaments such as the 2015 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament, 2015 AFF Women’s Championship and 2015 East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) Cup.
Congratulations to Abirami and Rohaidah!
