LIONESSES TO TAKE ON GUAM
SINGAPORE, 5 DECEMBER 2017: The Singapore Women’s National Team will be playing an international ‘A’ friendly against Guam on Saturday 9 December 2017 at Jalan Besar Stadium. The match will kick off at 7.30pm and admission is complimentary.
There are three new faces in the 21-strong squad – Ayumi Ummaiyah Binte Azlee, Nur Afiqah Binte Omar and Nur Umairah Binte Mohd Hamdan. Part of the Under-19 Women’s National Team, the three of them are preparing for the Asian Football Confederation Under-19 Women’s Championship 2019 Qualifiers next year.
Women’s National Team Head Coach K. Balagumaran said: “This match will be a good sparring opportunity for the team as the players have just completed their club duties at the recently concluded FAS-Sports Hub Women’s Challenge Cup. Stature-wise, the players in the Guam team are bigger than our players and they play a physical game. We might be technically stronger than them, but being physically stronger than us, they could give us a hard time like Macau did in the friendly we played against them in August. But the team is ready for battle and will do our best against Guam.
“I called up the three young players as we want to be building a team for the future. By training with the ‘A’ team and with guidance from the senior players, their tactical awareness and confidence will be boosted and in turn, they can lead the younger players in their team.”
GFA Sporting Westlake FC defender Nur Umairah, one of the two 15-year-olds called up to the squad, said: “I was surprised and pleased to be called up to the National Team because I feel that if I play and train with them, I can improve better and faster. I want to gain more experience through this match and play a good game with the team.”
Singapore last played against Guam in a quadrangular tournament in 2004, winning 2-0 over Guam.
