Lionesses squad announced for Macau friendly

Nurhidayu Naszri returns to the squad after two years out with injury

SINGAPORE, 9 JULY 2024 – Head Coach Karim Bencherifa has announced a 23-player squad for the Singapore Women’s National Team, who will take on Macau in their first home international friendly match of the year.

The match will take place on Tuesday, 16 July 2024, at Jalan Besar Stadium at 8pm SGT.

In making his selection, Karim shared the thought process that went into it: “With the aim of building a strong squad for major competitions such as the SEA Games next year, the technical staff and I have selected a diverse group of players. This includes experienced players like captain Rosnani Azman and Umairah Hamdan, promising talents like Sarah Zuris’qha, Farah Nurzahirah, and Kyra Taylor, who has received her first call-up to the senior team. There are also key players like Danelle Tan, Venetia Lim, Putri Syaliza, who bring their international experience.

“Our focus is on refining tactical approaches, experimenting with formations, and exploring various playing styles and strategies. This way, we can identify which strategies work best and which players we can rely on for these strategies in major competitions.

“I understand recent performances may have sparked concerns among our fans. While I appreciate their passion and support, I ask for your patience and trust in our process as we strive for improvement. The Lionesses have shown great dedication and hard work, and I believe this will lead to significant progress and resilience in our upcoming friendly against Macau.”

A notable highlight of the squad is the return of defender Nurhidayu Naszri, who was forced to sit out of international duty due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury to her right knee. Now cleared to play, she is set to make a comeback to the pitch after a year.  This is also the first time she and her younger sister, Natasha—both of whom play for Lion City Sailors—have been called up at the same time.

The 20-year-old defender said: “It was a great honour to rejoin the squad after a long hiatus due to my injury. I’m thrilled to see familiar faces again and am eager to play alongside the rest of the team. Although it will be a challenging journey, with the support of my teammates and coaches, I’m confident I can get back on track and perform to the best of my abilities. Additionally, having the chance to possibly play alongside my sister is a joyous moment for my family, as it has been their dream to see us both play for the national team together. Watching her grow and being able to share the field for Singapore is a moment we will always cherish.”

The squad will miss IMG Academy’s Irsalina Irwan, as she has suffered an ACL injury during a practice match.

Fans can purchase tickets for the game, priced at S$12.00 for adults and S$6.00 for concession, via Ticketek. Special bundle offers are also available for fans attending in groups: 10 adult tickets for S$100 or a bundle of five tickets for S$55. More information can be found here.
