SINGAPORE, 28 MARCH 2023 – The Singapore Women’s National Team Head Coach Karim Bencherifa today has named a final squad of 22 players for the upcoming Women’s Olympic Tournament 2024 Asian Qualifiers in Thailand.

The team will travel to Chonburi this Thursday, 30 March 2023 and begin their Group D campaign against Thailand two days later before facing Mongolia on Tuesday, 4 April 2023. Both matches will take place at the Chonburi Stadium.

The qualifiers will be Coach Bencherifa’s first test as the newly appointed Head Coach of the Women’s Team. The Moroccan will be boosted by the inclusion of overseas-based players, Putri Syaliza and Danelle Tan, in the team.

Rosnani recently ended her two-year stint in Japan last December, where she spent one season in 2021 playing professionally for International Athletic Club (INAC) Kobe Leonessa in the new Women Empowerment (WE) League, the country’s first professional women’s football league, before joining on loan with Kibi International of the Nadeshiko League Division from end of 2021 till the rest of 2022. She currently plays for Hougang United Women’s Team in the Deloitte Women’s Premier League (WPL).

Tan is in fine form having scored 2 goals so far for the London Bees in the English Football Association Women’s Premier Division. Last month she also became the youngest and first female Singaporean to play and score in a European football league.

The rest of the squad consists of players with combined experiences of club duties for WPL, and their participation in previous international matches, including the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Vietnam, ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Women’s Championship 2022, and the recent Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U20 Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers.

Coach Bencherifa said: “The Lionesses have a busy schedule this month and this qualifier will be a good way to prepare for our upcoming tournaments like the SEA Games.

“Together with my backroom staff, we have selected the girls based on their performances in the WPL and other age group tournaments, as well as the ability to fit into the strategy we will adopt. There will be a blend of experience and youth as my coaching staff, and I are keen on exposing the talented young players to the rigors of international football.

“Thailand and Mongolia are strong opponents, and the girls will need more time to get used to my demands and my playing style. That being said, anything can happen in football, and I will prepare the girls as much as we can, and I have faith that they will be able to put up a credible showing at the qualifiers.”
