SINGAPORE, 30 JUNE 2022 – The Singapore Women’s National Team will depart to Manila, the Philippines for the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Women’s Championship tomorrow.

The Lionesses have been drawn into Group A for the regional tournament, where they will first face Malaysia on 4 July before playing hosts Philippines, Thailand, Australia and Indonesia every alternate day.

Head Coach Stephen Ng is well aware of the challenging match-ups, in particular with 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup representatives Philippines and Australia, as well as Thailand, who competed in the last two editions.

However, Ng wants his charges to push themselves and said: “We are in our development phase and we are making progress. We can see a good momentum going and this is another experience that can really push us forward. Regardless of results, I want them to compete for every challenge and to be disciplined in their play. We will work hard in every game. Whatever the outcome, we should focus on the level of performance and approach our games with a good mentality. We have shown these attributes before when we faced Papua New Guinea and Hong Kong in international friendlies, that we are capable of battling higher-ranked teams and we will continue to build on this in Manila.”

Twenty-seven players have been named in the traveling squad. Defender Siti Rosnani Azman misses out due to league commitments with Japanese club Kibi International University Charme in the Nadeshiko League 2. The Lionesses will be led by defender Ernie Sulastri, whose next appearance will mark her 50th for Singapore.
