Lionesses to play friendlies in Vanuatu
SINGAPORE, 2 JUNE 2019 – As part of their continued preparations towards selection for November’s Southeast Asian (SEA) Games 2019, the Lionesses will be playing two away friendly matches on 3 and 6 June respectively.
Led by head coach Melisa Ye, the Women’s National Team will face Vanuatu before taking on Fiji. Both countries sit higher than Singapore in the FIFA rankings; Vanuatu is ranked 108th and Fiji 71st while Singapore is 120th.
Experienced campaigners such as Warriors FC’s Noor Kusumawati and Chris Yip-Au, who currently plays for Monaro Panthers FC in Australia’s National Premier League Women’s Capital Football, will be joined by young players like Dhaniyah Qasimah, Putri Nur Syaliza, Nur Atikah and Venetia Lim.
Ye said: “We are in the midst of our preparations to be selected for this year’s SEA Games and we are hoping to increase the team’s match experience by exposing them to quality opponents like Fiji and Vanuatu. These two countries are comparable to Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia in terms of the level of competition and will be a good gauge of where we are at this stage of preparations.”
The team enjoyed a good showing at the recent Arafura Games 2019 Women’s Football competition last month, where they finished in second place ahead of their opponents from Australia.
