The Official Draw was conducted today afternoon in Bangkok, Thailand. This year’s tournament will see the return of the full home-and-away format that was first introduced in the 2018 edition, where each team will play two of their group-stage matches on home soil. The top two teams of each group will proceed to the two-legged semi-finals, which will take place from 6 to 10 January 2023.
Nishigaya said: “We will not underestimate any team in the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022 and are eager to face our group-stage opponents. The team did well to reach the semi-finals in the previous edition and we will aim to give our best again this time and challenge for the trophy, but it is also important to stay focused and take it game by game.
“Of course, I understand the intense rivalry between Singapore and Malaysia, and it is an experience I am looking forward to. Furthermore, I am very excited as this will be my first time leading the Lions at this regional tournament since taking charge of the team.
“My backroom staff and I have already started to plan for the preparations in the build-up to the tournament, and I know that all our players are looking forward to compete as well. I cannot wait to lead the Lions out at home in front of all of our Singapore fans and do the country proud.”
