Four overseas based players set to return to the squad for final preparatory games
before key World Cup Round 1 Qualifier in October

SINGAPORE, 24 AUGUST 2023 – Singapore Men’s National Team Coach Takayuki Nishigaya today has called up 28 players for the upcoming friendly matches in the September international window.

The Lions will play 110th-ranked Tajikistan (8 September), and 153rd-ranked Chinese Taipei (12 September) next month at Bishan Stadium, with both games kicking off at 7.30pm (Singapore time). The Bishan Stadium, having been selected as the venue for these two friendlies given the unavailability of National Stadium, would be a familiar venue for many of the Lions plying their trade in the Singapore Premier League (SPL), while enabling international football to be brought to the heartlands.

Four overseas-based players – Jacob Mahler, Irfan Fandi, Ryhan Stewart and Song Uiyoung – will make their return to the squad after not featuring in the June international friendlies. The return to international action will be keenly anticipated by both Jacob and Zulqarnaen Suzliman, who have overcome anterior cruciate ligament and hamstring injuries respectively, sustained in early 2022. Geylang International forward Iqbal Hussain’s performances in the SPL have earned him a recall to the national setup since he last featured in March 2019. Two notable absentees however will be the striking sibling duo Ikhsan Fandi and Ilhan Fandi, who are both undergoing the final stages of their respective rehabilitation from knee injuries.

Nishigaya was keen to emphasise the importance of the two friendlies, saying: “These two upcoming matches are vital for our preparations for the first round of our Qualifiers against Guam in October.  The March and June International Windows were good opportunities for us to call-up new players, expose them to football at the international level and for me to see who among them were able to adapt to our team tactics. I have confidence in the players I have selected and I’m looking forward to seeing them perform against two good opponents in Tajikistan and Chinese Taipei.”

Match Tickets on sale from today

Tickets to the two Singapore National Team friendly matches are now on sale, priced at $15.00 for an adult, and $8 for concession (before booking fees) for each matchday.  Each person is allowed to purchase a maximum of twelve tickets per transaction, across any category, per matchday.

Fans will enjoy a 30 percent discount off the full price of standard tickets (both adult and concession respectively) if they purchase a full bundle for both matchdays. Sale of tickets may be purchased online from http://www.fas.org.sg/tickets and http://sistic.com.sg  as well as onsite on match days.

Match tickets may also be purchased onsite at the Bishan Stadium ticketing booth – Front Entrance starting from 5:30pm to 8:45pm on match days; however, this will be strictly subjected to availability and only a limited number may be put up for sale. As Bishan Stadium is a limited capacity venue, fans are highly encouraged to purchase their tickets early and via the online sales channel to avoid the queues on match day. There will be a designated seating arrangement for home and away fans, and re-entry into the stadium will be allowed via the use of coloured wrist tags.
