LIONS SQUAD TO PLAY MALDIVES, CHINESE TAIPEI CONFIRMED
SINGAPORE, 13 MARCH 2018: Singapore head coach V. Sundram Moorthy today confirmed the 23-man squad for the upcoming International ‘A’ friendly against Maldives and the 2019 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup Qualifier against Chinese Taipei.
There is a maiden call-up for 17-year-old Benjamin Davis, who plays for Fulham FC’s Under-18 side after signing scholarship forms last July.
Benjamin said: “I was pleasantly surprised to receive the call up and this moment means a lot to me as I have always wanted to play for the National Team. My training at Fulham FC has been enriching and I am learning all the time. I will be making the most of this opportunity to learn from Coach Sundram and the more experienced players whom I will be joining.”
He is one of two uncapped players in the squad, the other being Geylang International FC defender Anders Aplin. Young Lions striker Ikhsan Fandi has also been named on standby to travel with the team.
Adam Swandi has earned a recall to the squad after a stellar 2017 season with Home United FC, having last turned out for the Lions in August 2015. He is one of two Singaporeans to sign with Albirex Niigata FC (S) this season. Hougang United FC attacker Iqbal Hussain and experienced centre-back Baihakki Khaizan, who plays for Thai second-tier side Udon Thani FC, have also returned to the National Team set-up.
Singapore will play Maldives on 23 March 2018 at the National Stadium in the lead-up to their final Asian Cup Qualifier match away against Chinese Taipei on 27 March.
Attractive bundle tickets have been made available for fans who wish to catch not only the National Team in action, but also the Under-23 National Team as well as Albirex Niigata FC (S) and Tampines Rovers FC in the Great Eastern Community Shield. All matches will be played at the National Stadium. Bundle tickets, which start at $9.00 for concession rates, may be bought here: bit.ly/2Hiwxvb.
Coach Sundram said: “With several of our players plying their trade overseas this year, they will be bringing wide-ranging experiences to the squad. I have called up a mix of players, with some new, some familiar and some returning faces. These two matches are important to me in terms of bringing in fresh players into the fold to complement the seasoned players. I am looking forward to working with the boys again and hope to be playing to a full crowd of fans in our Lions’ first game of 2018 at the National Stadium.”
