Malaysia Cup 2014 Draw Results Released
KUALA LUMPUR, 13 JULY 2014: The draw for the Malaysia Cup 2014 competition was conducted today at the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), with the LionsXII set to face Pahang, Felda United and Johor Darul Ta’zim II in Group A.
“We are pleased with the draw. There are no easy teams in a cup competition, but we are quietly confident. Although results did not go our way in the Malaysian Super League, we won our final game so I hope we will maintain that momentum going into the Cup. The players are hungry to prove a point, and I hope our fans will pack the stands at Jalan Besar Stadium to give us the extra push,” said LionsXII assistant coach Nazri Nasir, who was present at the draw.
“We have had a tough time in the League with several players out at different times, but now everyone is back and ready to up their game for the Cup campaign,‚Äù said team captain Isa Halim, who also witnessed the draw at the FAM and only recently returned from a three-month injury layoff himself.
“The bulk of the team has experienced what it’s like to go through a Malaysia Cup campaign. We were unfortunate to be knocked out in the semi-final and quarter-final in the past two seasons, but with the fans behind us and with the benefit of our experience, I am confident that we will be able to do well,” he affirmed.
A total of 16 teams, split into four groups of four teams each, will be participating in this 88th edition of the Malaysia Cup. LionsXII will have to finish in the top two of their group to proceed to the knockout stages. They will be aiming to live up to an illustrious legacy, with Singapore teams having won the tournament 24 times – the second-most number of wins – despite not competing between 1995 and 2011.
