The Young Lions are set to kick-off their 2021 AIA Singapore Premier League (SPL) season this Sunday under the stewardship of Coach Philippe Aw as 2020’s head coach Nazri Nasir continues his rehabilitation process following a medical procedure late last year.

Former Singapore captain Nazri, 50, helmed the Young Lions during 2020 in his first season as an SPL head coach and will remain as a key member of the coaching staff in an advisory role this year.

In addition, Nazri, in his role as the Under-22 Men’s National Team Head Coach, will monitor eligible players in SPL clubs and work closely with club coaches as part of the preparations for the 2022 AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers in late October and the SEA Games in November.

44-year-old Aw, who had stepped in to lead the Young Lions’ with pre-season preparations since Nazri’s medical procedure, will be in the dugout on 14 March, 2021 when they host Balestier Khalsa at the Jalan Besar Stadium in their SPL opener. He will also assist Nazri with the U22s during the international windows this season.

Aw said: “Youth development has been a big part of my coaching journey and I am happy to help out at the Young Lions, which is also about developing players. I am very clear about what I want to do here, which is to improve each and every one of them. They are at a developmental stage given some of them are as young as 16 years; if I can help to improve each of them by the end of the season, for me that’s my objective met from day one.”

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) wishes Coach Nazri a speedy recovery and Coach Philippe all the best for the 2021 SPL campaign season opener and beyond.
