National Team To Face Myanmar And Chinese Taipei At Jalan Besar Stadium
SINGAPORE, 27 MAY 2017: The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) today confirmed that the National Team will face Chinese Taipei in the Final Round of the 2019 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup Qualifiers on 10 June 2017. As part of the team’s preparations for the qualifier, National Team coach V. Sundram Moorthy requested that a closed-door international friendly against Myanmar be played on 6 June. Both matches will be played at Jalan Besar Stadium.
Said Coach Sundram: “The friendly against Myanmar will be a good opportunity for us to fine-tune our tactics before playing against Chinese Taipei four days later. We are pleased that both matches will be played at Jalan Besar Stadium, because we are familiar with the surface – hopefully this will give us an advantage, especially in the AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Chinese Taipei. We are looking forward to the games that the National Team will be playing in June, as we work towards our aim of qualifying for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates.”
The qualifier against Chinese Taipei was originally scheduled for 13 June, but both teams agreed to shift it to 10 June to allow Singapore to play against two-time FIFA World Cup winners Argentina, as part of the FAS’ 125th anniversary celebrations.
“The opportunity to face Argentina was something we wanted to give our fans as well as our National Team players, so we are grateful to Chinese Taipei for agreeing to the switch. Unfortunately the National Stadium was not available on the new date as it was already booked for another event, but we will continue to look for all available opportunities to play more football matches at the Singapore Sports Hub to allow more Singaporeans to support the National Team, and bring back the Kallang Roar,” added Coach Sundram.
Tickets for the Chinese Taipei match will go on sale from 9am tomorrow, Sunday 28 May 2017 onwards.
