National Team To Play Four Matches In July

SINGAPORE, 1 JULY 2016: The Football Association of Singapore is pleased to announce that the National Team will be playing four matches in July – three friendlies against club sides on a training tour to Japan and an away ‘A’ international friendly against Cambodia – as part of a long-term preparation plan for the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup later this year.

The 25-strong squad will assemble for centralised training from 11-17 July, before travelling to Niigata, Japan, from 18-26 July where they will face Albirex Niigata FC on 24 July. Details of another two matches to be played during the team’s training trip against Japanese clubs will be announced at a later date. The team will then be in Phnom Penh to play against Cambodia on 28 July.

“With the AFF Suzuki Cup coming up at the end of the year, I am grateful to the FAS management for arranging this centralised training camp as it is an important part of our preparations. At this stage of our preparations, it is essential for us to get together regularly and have high-quality matches against good opponents. I also would like to thank the S.League clubs for graciously releasing their players to us for this training camp,” said coach of the National Team, V. Sundram Moorthy.

“Our time together in July will let me have a good look at players who have performed well in the S.League, and let all the selected players have a better understanding of my expectations,” explained coach Sundram.

Said veteran defender Daniel Bennett, recalled to the National Team after having last featured in 2013: “I’m delighted to be back in the National Team. It is always an honour to represent Singapore, and I want to thank Coach Sundram for this opportunity. I think my inclusion shows the National Team door is never closed on anyone, as long as they do well consistently for their clubs.”
