NFA U16 wins FAS Centre of Excellence U17 Challenge Cup 2016
The National Football Academy (NFA) Under-16s defeated Home United FC Blue Under-17s 5-4 on penalties to emerge as champions of the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) Centre of Excellence (COE) Under-17 Challenge Cup. The final, which was played yesterday at Jalan Besar Stadium, had ended 2-2 in regulation time after the Protectors scored an 82nd minute equaliser.
NFA U16 lifted the trophy in front of 850 spectators, finishing the Challenge Cup on a good note after two and a half weeks of matches. Geylang International FC Under-17 played the Third Place Play-off the day before against Home United FC Red Under-17 and won 2-1 to finish as Second Runner Up.
FAS Technical Director Michel Sablon presented the NFA U16s with a trophy and medals, while Home United FC Blue U17 and Geylang International FC U17 received First and Second Runner Up medals respectively.
Mr Sablon said: “The FAS COE U17 Challenge Cup 2016 allowed the young players to showcase their abilities and pit their skills against their peers. The players’ enthusiasm and passion for the game was a delight to watch. Congratulations to the NFA U16 team for emerging as champions of this year’s Challenge Cup.”
Contested by the COE League teams, this year’s FAS COE Under-17 Challenge Cup saw 10 teams participating.
