SINGAPORE, 27 NOVEMBER 2023 – The Coaching and Education Department (CED) of the Football Associaton of Singapore (FAS) has recently concluded the 2023 FAS/AFC ‘B’ Diploma (SG-Coach Level 2 Full Integration) Coaching Course (Part 1) for coaches from ActiveSG Football Academy. The course, which was held between 16 to 18 and 23 to 25 October 2023 at Choa Chu Kang Stadium and Jalan Besar Stadium respectively, saw the active participation of 23 coaches.

The decision to tailor the course specifically for this academy was influenced by the overwhelming interest shown by their coaches during the earlier registration period for the FAS/AFC ‘B’ Diploma (SG-Coach Level 2 Full Integration) Coaching Course held earlier this year.

Assistant Coach Developer Abdul Musawir Bin Abdul Gany presented the “Identifying Football Problems” topic to the coaches, October 2023.

Under the guidance of Lead Coach Developer, Mr Loh Ngiap Tai, and Assistant Coach Developer, Mr Abdul Musawir Bin Abdul Gany, the course unfolded in three segments: Pre-Course, In-Course, and Post-Course.

During the Pre-Course segment, participants engaged in 12 hours of e-learning sessions on SG-Coach Theory Level 2 and Intermediate Sport Science. The In-Course segment, Part 1 of 4, focused on various theory and practical assessments, covering topics such as the “National Coaching Philosophy,” “Coaching Session Delivery Models,” “Introduction to Game Systems and Game Tactics,” and “Identifying Football Problems.”

Mr Sukhbir Singh from the Referees Department presented on the “Laws of the Game”, October 2023.

The course featured guest presenters from FAS’s Goalkeeping Department, Referees Department, and Football Science & Medicine Department. Topics ranged from “Shot Stopping & Handling Crosses” to “Laws of the Game” and various Sports Science topics like “Regeneration & Recovery”, “Strength & Conditioning”, and “Football Fitness”.

Reflecting on the experience, Mr Kwok Wing Hong Fabian, a course participant and coach at ActiveSG Football Academy Hougang Centre, said: “During Part 1 of the FAS/AFC ‘B’ Diploma (SG-Coach Level 2 Full Integration) Coaching Course, my fellow course participants and I have gained insightful exposure to the high standards expected out of a certified FAS/AFC ‘B’ Diploma (SG-Coach Level 2 Full Integration) coach. These expectations were exemplary from our Coach Developers who step by step, gave us further knowledge into coaching football at a higher level or in the youth age group such as the planning and preparation prior to the execution on the field which often goes unnoticed. We were also given useful theoretical lessons which emphasise having a growth mindset and values-based learning that can be crucial in coaching players during developmental years. Overall, it has been a very positive learning journey so far and I look forward to Part 2 of the course.”

He added: “I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn from experienced course participants and Coach Developers and gain insights that will benefit the players that I’m coaching. I’m blessed for the friendships and connections I made during the course, and I look forward to collaborating with fellow course participants in the future.”

Mr Loh Ngiap Tai, Lead Coach Developer, commended the commitment and enthusiasm of the participants, expressing excitement about supporting these coaches in their journey to new career heights: “It’s a testament to their dedication and the bright future they’re shaping for Singapore football. As we move forward in this course, we’re excited to support these coaches in their journey, helping them reach new career heights while contributing significantly to the sport’s growth.”

Technical Director Michael Browne concluded: “The idea of this course came about when we saw a significant number of coaches from the ActiveSG Football Academy who were interested in participating in our FAS/AFC ‘B’ Diploma (SG-Coach Level 2 Full Integration) Coaching Course when we opened for registration earlier this year. Hence, we decided to have a course specifically for their coaches so that we could have coaches from our other stakeholders participate in our FAS/AFC ‘B’ Diploma (SG-Coach Level 2 Full Integration) Coaching Course held earlier this year. FAS extends its sincere gratitude to the ActiveSG Football Academy for their invaluable support and the generous provision of facilities for this course.”
