Philippe Aw names Singapore squad for AFF U15 Championships

SINGAPORE, 22 JULY 2019 – Singapore Under-15 National Team Head Coach Philippe Aw has finalised his 22-strong squad for the 2019 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Under-15 Championship that will take place from 27 July to 9 August in Chonburi, Thailand.
Singapore have been drawn in Group A alongside defending champions Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Timor-Leste and the Philippines. They open their campaign against Myanmar on 27 July.
The squad, which is participating in their first ever AFF tournament, comprises five players from Singapore Premier League clubs and includes Finland-based defender Xavier Wong.
Aw, who took up his role in January, has placed a strong emphasis on discipline and teamwork when selecting the players.
“Discipline is one of the cornerstones upon which a successful team is built,” he said. “We had a plan since last year with the introduction of the FAS U14 developmental league and we have been monitoring eligible players over the past few months, speaking with school and club coaches, and watching players as much as possible during local competitions. The players who made the final squad have shown that they possess the right mindset and attitude that is required at this early stage if they wish to progress to the next level. Having excellent technical ability is not enough if you are unable to instil the desire to display professionalism both on and off the pitch. This is the stage where we need to start the process.
“As this will be their first AFF tournament, it is also important for these boys to learn from such international matches as it will aid their development towards the long-term goal of being a full-fledged National Team player.
“Our aim at this tournament is to be competitive in all our matches, while displaying the key values of discipline, resilience and teamwork.”
The top two teams in each group qualify for the semi-finals on 7 August, with the third/fourth-placing match and the final scheduled to be held on 9 August.
The Singapore U15s will depart Singapore on Thursday, 25 July.
