28 players to vie for a spot in the final Under-22 Men’s National Team squad for
Group H campaign in end October

SINGAPORE, 6 OCTOBER 2021 – A provisional squad of 28 players was named today for the Singapore Under-22 Men’s National Team’s upcoming Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-23 Asian Cup 2022 qualifying campaign.

Singapore are set to begin their Group H campaign against Timor-Leste on 25 October 2021 before going on to play the Philippines and Korea Republic over the following six days.

This provisional squad was selected based on player performances throughout the 2021 AIA Singapore Premier League (SPL) season as well as the two centralised U22 training camps that were held in June and September. Forward Ilhan Fandi has been ruled out due to injury; he is currently recuperating after undergoing a surgery in mid-September.

The team will undergo centralised training starting on 11 October before being whittled down to a final tournament squad of 23 on 18 October.

Singapore U22 Head Coach Nazri Nasir said: “This team has been picked after looking at all the eligible players’ displays during the SPL season and of course in extensive consultation with my assistant Philippe Aw, who has worked very closely with the Young Lions as their Head Coach this year.

“During this upcoming centralised training, we will further emphasise on the philosophy we have adapted for the boys to execute since the previous centralised training. We will also be looking at players who have good character, both in and outside the field. Of course, a winning mentality is very important, especially as these boys have not played international tournaments for a while; this is where we will look at how hungry they are to fight for a place in the final squad.

“Everyone will have the chance to prove their worth during the training sessions and again, we want to emphasise that possessing the right mentality is important, along with their playing abilities and understanding of our playing philosophies.”

In line with the prevailing COVID-19 safe management measures, a maximum of 1,000 spectators will be allowed in the stadium for each match. Detailed ticketing information will be released next week.

Singapore are aiming to make the final tournament for the first time in its history. A total of 11 groups from both the West and East Zone will contest the Qualifiers, with the group winners and four best second-placed teams set to advance to the final stage. The AFC U23 Asian Cup 2022, the fifth edition of the tournament, will be held in Uzbekistan in June 2022.
