Provisional Singapore squad named for AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022
29 players to head for December training camp in Japan and play Maldives friendly at home before final tournament squad is named
Singapore line-up, 21 September 2022
SINGAPORE, 10 NOVEMBER 2022 – Singapore Men’s National Team Head Coach Takayuki Nishigaya today named a provisional squad of 29 players for the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Mitsubishi Electric (ME) Cup 2022. (UPDATE: Amy Recha was added to the squad on 23 November 2022 – details here)
The Lions will travel to Chiba, Japan for a training camp from 1 to 12 December, where they are set to play two training matches. Defender Ryhan Stewart will only link up with the squad after the camp due to his club commitments with Thai second-tier side Chiangmai FC. The team will then face the Maldives in an international ‘A’ friendly at home at the Jalan Besar Stadium on 17 December for their final tune-up ahead of the AFF ME Cup 2022.
Takayuki Nishigaya will name his final tournament squad of 23 after the match, ahead of Singapore’s Group B campaign that begins at home against Myanmar on 24 December. Vietnam, Malaysia and Laos are the other teams in the group.
Nishigaya said: “This upcoming training camp and the friendly match with the Maldives are key phases of our final preparations for the AFF ME Cup 2022. In Japan, we will face teams that possess similar playing styles to ASEAN teams, which will be of great benefit to us.
“I have called up these players for the provisional squad based on their performances at club level as well as the positional needs of the team, with certain players able to play in multiple positions where required – which I believe is necessary for our style of play.
“During this period, I want the players to show what they can offer to the team. The ME Cup holds special significance in Singapore football, and I want to see desire and determination from the players because we need to stick together and play as one for the country.”
