Squad to undergo two-week centralized training camp in Thailand

SINGAPORE, 19 AUGUST 2023 – Singapore Under-22 Men’s National Team Head Coach Nazri Nasir has called up a squad of 26 players for centralized training in preparation for the upcoming 2024 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024 Qualifiers in September.

Singapore’s qualifying games will be held in Vietnam from 6 to 12 September 2023 and will see the team return to competitive action following the 2023 SEA Games earlier in May. As part of their preparations, the Under-22 squad will commence centralized training, including a training camp in Bangkok, Thailand, from 21 August 2023 to 3 September 2023. In addition, they will be playing North Bangkok University, Bangkok United and the Thailand U-23 team in a series of friendlies while in Thailand prior to the competition proper in Vietnam.

A fresh face called up to the provisional squad is 21-year-old Azim Akbar who plies his trade in the Singapore Premier League with Tanjong Pagar United. Having impressed Coach Nazri in his domestic club games to earn this pick, the youngster will be looking to go on to book a spot in the final squad bound for Vietnam. There are two notable absentees from the squad in forward Ilhan Fandi and winger Khairin Nadim. Ilhan is in his final recovery phase from a long-term knee injury sustained last year, while Khairin is two months into his National Service vocational training.

Head Coach Nazri shared his thoughts on the players that he has called up for the provisional squad saying: “I have been following the progress of these boys in the Singapore Premier League and especially in the Centre of Excellence Under-21 League and I believe that I have chosen the best available squad for the upcoming training camp as well as the AFC tournament”.

“Being prepared is the key to doing well in anything that we try. We achieve success by planning carefully, working hard, and staying committed. I have confidence in this group of players as I have seen their passion and commitment levels during the matches that I observed. The upcoming training camp will give our players a chance to face different types of opponents and use the skills they have been working hard on during training. It would also allow me to see how the team shapes up as we prepare to get into competition mode in Hanoi. ”

On the expectations going into the AFC U-23 tournament in Vietnam, Nazri added: “It is a very important tournament for us, but we will not be focusing only on the end result. Obviously most of them were part of the recent disappointing SEA Games, hence it is also an opportunity for them, personally and collectively, to apply the learnings over the last few months and show they can compete hard, and with heart. We need to show to everyone all the hard work and effort that we have put in as a team, and we must display it in every game that we step on the pitch for. I am sure the players understand the need to rise to the challenge and show that they have the ability to go up against the best in the region and prove to themselves as well as our fans that we can overcome anything that comes our way.”

A final squad of 23 players will be announced after the completion of the centralized training in early September.
