Revamped NFL To Kick Off 2017 Season On 22 April

SINGAPORE, 11 APRIL 2017: The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) today announced that the National Football League (NFL) Divisions One and Two will kick off on Saturday 22 April 2017 at Jalan Besar Stadium.

Reigning champions Eunos Crescent FC will meet GFA Sporting Westlake FC in the first NFL Division One game of the season at 7.30pm, with the match being one of 23 NFL Division One matches to be livestreamed this season. Earlier on the same day, Warwick Knights FC and Kembangan United FC will be opening the NFL Division Two season at 5.00pm, also at Jalan Besar Stadium.

The two-division NFL format was first announced in September 2016 as part of the restructuring of the NFL. It is intended to further develop football at all levels and provide more playing opportunities for our footballers.

Mr Rahim Non, Club Advisor for Jungfrau Punggol FC, is looking forward to the kick-off of the much-anticipated 2017 NFL season. He said: “The revamp of the NFL by the FAS has brought about a renewed sense of excitement and optimism for our league moving forward. I am encouraged by the efforts made by the FAS to listen to the NFL clubs and provide greater assistance in areas such as training pitches. Another problem faced by clubs is the issue of insurance coverage for our players and we are happy to know that FAS will be addressing this key concern by implementing group insurance coverage for all NFL players.”

His sentiments were echoed by Singapore Khalsa Association Trainer, Mr Sasi Kumar, who commented: “We have been working very hard to prepare our team to fight for honours in this year’s NFL. Improvements have also been made by the FAS for the NFL, such as an increase in prize money and more publicity for the league through the weekly live-streaming of matches and as a club, we are raring to go for the new season which we know will be a highly-competitive one.”

The 2017 NFL comprises 12 teams playing in Division One and 11 teams playing in Division Two.
