RHB Singapore Cup Draw Spices Up Third Car-free Sunday
SINGAPORE, 24 APRIL 2016: The Padang and Esplanade Park in the Civic District provided a picturesque backdrop for today’s draw for the 2016 RHB Singapore Cup, held as part of the third Car-Free Sunday SG. Over 200 people comprising S.League players, children from S.League clubs’ academies and their families were present to witness children representing their respective clubs, including the foreign clubs, conduct the draw to determine the fixtures.
Minister for Communications and Information Dr Yaacob Ibrahim attended the event as Guest-of-Honour, and participated in a mass warm-up with the participants before unveiling the RHB Singapore Cup trophy.
“We are delighted to conduct the draw for this year’s RHB Singapore Cup as part of Car-Free Sunday SG. As the most popular sport in Singapore, football plays an important role in bringing the community together and encouraging Singaporeans to lead a healthy lifestyle,” said Mr Zainudin Nordin, President, Football Association of Singapore.
“Football is a team sport, and without good teammates it would be impossible to do well. We are grateful to have a strong teammate in RHB Bank, which has been an unstinting supporter of Singapore football for a long time – and we hope for a long time to come,” added Mr Zainudin.
After the draw, 15 teams of children under 10 participated in the RHB Singapore Cup Kids’ Tournament on the street soccer court built specially for the event.
“RHB is extremely proud to be the title sponsor of Singapore’s only premier regional football Cup tournament for the last 12 years, and being part of Singapore’s football story. Over the years, RHB’s operations in Singapore have also grown alongside our unwavering commitment to the S.League. We are heartened to see an increasing interest in the S.League this year and we’re equally excited about the quality of teams that are going to compete in the 2016 RHB Singapore Cup. This is looking to be an exuberant year for the RHB Singapore Cup!” enthused Mr Jason Wong, Country Head, RHB Bank Singapore.
The three foreign clubs participating in this year’s edition of the RHB Singapore Cup are Nagaworld FC (Cambodia), Ceres La Salle (Philippines) and Global FC (Philippines). They will play in the first round together with non-seeded teams Garena Young Lions, Geylang International FC, Home United FC, Hougang United FC and Warriors FC. The winners of these matches will then proceed to face the seeded teams – defending RHB Singapore Cup champions Albirex Niigata FC (S), the reigning Great Eastern-Yeo’s S.League champions Brunei DPMM FC, Balestier Khalsa FC and Tampines Rovers FC.
