SINGAPORE, 19 SEPTEMBER 2022 – Singapore Men’s National Team Head Coach Takayuki Nishigaya has called up Sahil Suhaimi and Syed Firdaus Hassan to the squad for this week’s international ‘A’ friendly matches against Vietnam and India.
The duo replace Faris Ramli and Song Uiyoung, both of the Lion City Sailors, who were included in the 23-strong team that was announced last Tuesday. Faris’ withdrawal comes after his expectant wife is due to deliver their second child in the coming week. While both his club’s and the Lions’ medical team have cleared him to play, Song made the decision to pull out of the travelling team as a precaution to a previously sustained ankle injury.
Coach Nishigaya remains upbeat despite the withdrawals, saying, “It is always a challenge when there are late dropouts especially when we are facing tough opposition in Vietnam and India, but I have belief in the strength and the depth of the team I have assembled. Family is more important than anything else, so I understand Faris not travelling with us. As for Song, it is his personal decision. I have full confidence with the two replacements I have called up and we must now focus on tackling the two matches that lay ahead.”
Hougang United forward Sahil last featured for the Lions in November 2019, while it is a maiden senior call-up for Tampines Rovers midfielder Syed Firdaus, who has been capped at Under-22 level.
The Lions departed today morning to Ho Chi Minh City for the matches against Vietnam and India on 21 and 24 September respectively.
